Fashion lovers, rejoice: the Met Gala is back, baby! After two years of pandemic-induced cancellations and rescheduling, the biggest night in fashion is officially making a return to its usual first Monday in May time-slot. This time around, the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute is continuing its American theme, with the exhibition titled “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” (part one, last year was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”) and dress code themed as Gilded Glamour.

While last year’s event saw Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Naomi Osaka, and Amanda Gorman grab the mic as hosts, this year’s event will be co-chaired by Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Lin-Manual Miranda. Meanwhile, Met Gala mastermind Anna Wintour, designer Tom Ford, and head of Instagram Adam Mosseri will serve as honorary co-chairs.

Luckily, after last year’s September gala functioned as a slightly smaller event, with some of our fave fashion icons missing from the red carpet line-up and some highly chaotic looks (see Frank Ocean’s green baby, Alexandra Ocasio Cortez’ over-memed “tax the rich” gown, and Kim Petras’ Collina Strada horse head look for proof), this year’s event is supposed to be all about excess and opulence due to its glamorous, ultra-formal white tie theme.

Now, before you click on the red-carpet live streams and log onto high fashion Twitter come Monday night, we’ve rounded up a cheat sheet to 2022’s Met Gala return because no one really knows what Gilded Glamour is… do they? 


### WHAT IS GILDED GLAMOUR? 

Based off the MET’s two year-running exhibition covering the relevancy of American fashion, Gilded Glamour references America’s Gilded Age – a period of exponential industrialisation and economic growth from around 1870 to 1900. During this time, people faced a huge wealth disparity, as a few rich families – think Vanderbilts, Astors, and Whitneys – owned over one third of the country’s money while lower class families owned little to none. 

While the exhibition will spotlight individual dressmakers and designers who worked in the US around the late 19th century, there’s a good chance celebs will turn up in renditions of clothes typical during that time: corsets, silk dresses, puffy sleeves, opulent jewels, lace, frills, and delicate gloves. The more luxurious, the better. However, due to the widespread inequality and social issues faced during the time period – we could expect to see some political statements incorporated into looks this year.

Meanwhile, as with every Met, it’s safe to assume some people will get the theme a bit wrong (sorry, Karlie Kloss, but you weren’t looking camp right in the eye). This year, we’re expecting a few attendees might aim for Marie Antoinette style-looks, which – although similar – don’t exactly fit the theme… perhaps we’ll see a few looks from Moschino’s AW20 Marie Antoinette cake collection? TBH, we wouldn’t complain.

There’s a good chance celebs will turn up in renditions of clothes typical during that time: corsets, silk dresses, puffy sleeves, opulent jewels, lace, frills, and delicate gloves. The more luxurious, the better.

### WHO’S ON THE ROSTER?

While last year lacked a few major names, this year’s gala is set to include a full roster of all our faves, including the likes of Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, Frank Ocean, Kim Kardashian (and Pete Davidson!), Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Lil Nas X, Hunter Schafer, and more. 

Sadly, Zendaya will be missing from the best-dressed list this year, as the star shared on social media that she’s skipping to focus on work. Meanwhile, as Rihanna is camped out in Barbados to deliver her baby, it’s unclear whether she’ll be in attendance. Who knows… maybe she’ll risk it and we’ll get a historic Met Ball moment.



### WHO WILL THEY BE WEARING?

Similar to last year, we’re expecting guests to favour some classic American designers, such as Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Thom Browne, Christopher John Rogers, Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors. We’ll also probably see some looks from recent and archival collections that fit the Gilded Glamour bill with OTT luxe designs or pristine tailoring – think Alexander McQueen, Loewe, Vivienne Westwood, Dior, and Christian Lacroix. 

Alternatively, this year could also be a good opportunity to feature some rising American names on the red carpet, such as New York’s Peter Do who stole the show at AW22’s NYFW.

We’ll probably see  looks from recent and archival collections that fit the Gilded Glamour bill with OTT luxe designs or pristine tailoring – think Alexander McQueen, Loewe, Vivienne Westwood, Dior, and Christian Lacroix. 

### WHAT FASHION MOMENTS CAN WE EXPECT?

Even though Met Gala looks are kept secret until the day of, some fashion fans have taken to TikTok and Twitter to make predictions for this year's red carpet – especially when it comes to Kim Kardashian, who is notoriously known to grace the best dressed lists. Specifically, after seeing Kim exit Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Miami in April, fans speculated that she might wear Marilyn Monroe’s famous $5 million “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress worn to a 1962 fundraiser for President John F. Kennedy and currently stored at the Miami museum.

While Kim hasn’t addressed the rumour, she did share her nerves about this year’s look in an interview with Access Hollywood. "I think it will be up to the last minute because it can't be tailored. So, I have to fit into it like, exactly,” she said, confirming speculation that she’s wearing a historic, archival look that can’t be altered. After her iconic Balenciaga all-black outfit, we’re expecting another internet-breaking look.

To align oneself with the upper class is to carve out your own pariahdom. Online, little is more embarrassing than being a horse girl from the Home Counties with a Soho House membership – and this is particularly true of fashion, where designers have spent the best part of a decade playing with working class ‘aesthetics’ – tattered trainers, DHL ephemera, and ripstop workwear. On the street, private schoolers are distinguished not by their red chinos, gilets, and waxed raincoats, but by North Face [puffer jackets](https://woo.itv.com/posts/the-cosy-boy-the-comforting-aesthetic-seeing-you-through-tough-times), Palace fleeces, and clunky hoop earrings. Even the protagonists of *Made in Chelsea* and *The Only Way is Essex* have begun to dress the same, though that probably has more to do with them wanting to be influencers than anything remotely class-related.

Perhaps it’s considered too gauche, too much an efface to austerity, but flaunting privilege no longer has the same cachet as it did in say, 2008, when troves of rich GCSE and A Level students would pop their Ralph Lauren collars and carry their packed lunches in Jack Wills shopping bags. Back then, “the university outfitters” was Britain’s equivalent of Abercrombie & Fitch, another rich kid lodestone, modelling itself on an all-American vision of college life with its porcelain-teeth, ski seasons, and slumber parties. Of course, being preppy and being posh are distinct categories – it’s the difference between Hampstead and the Hamptons – but both seem to be undergoing a quiet resurgence within culture, levelled by the entertainment industry, fashion designers, and social media teens alike. 

The most obvious convergence point here is a knitted sweater, dotted with cartoon sheep, which has been circulating TikTok and Instagram. Worn by Emma Corrin on *The Crown*, the piece was first photographed on Princess Diana at the polo in 1981, with a redux now being sold by Rowing Blazers – a New York-based label set up by an Oxford-educated archaeologist. While this might be the most literal translation of the prepster that we’ve seen, as trends mutate into different belief systems, they acquire new attributes. Today, the prep revival is worn as part of a craftedly-retro look – think Brendon Babenzien’s Noah – where its 1950s hallmarks (letterman sweaters, pinstriped shirts, and school boy shorts) are distorted to streetwear proportions. Or Nigo, who embroidered bomber jackets with Japanese maps as part of his Kenzo debut and Willy Chavarria, who reimagined football jerseys with homoerotic frisson during his AW22 collection. 

In London, LVMH Prize nominee and menswear designer Steven Stokey-Daley did the same kind of thing, subverting public school culture with BDSM vests, sculptural trousers, and femme-flouncy shirting. Meanwhile, a set of Wall Street yuppies began to emerge on the season’s other runways – hyper-optimistic 80s worker culture via Peter Do’s oversized blazers, Louis Vuitton’s pendulous ties, and Cormio’s leather loafers. It was a look that chimed with Evan Mock and all the well-to-do Upper East Siders cast on the Gossip Girl reboot and nepo-babies like Iris Law and Bella Hadid (the real American Dream) who have seemingly joined their age mates in scrounging Depop for archival GAP hoodies and Abercrombie & Fitch denim. Not to mention Tyler, the Creator, in all his librarian cardigans, Mary Jane brogues, and Lacoste cricket sweaters, rekindling the relationship between hip hop and prepsters à la Tommy Hilfiger in the 90s.

Today, the conservative ideologies associated with the proponents of preppy fashion are just as likely to be shilled by fast fashion influencers – hello girlboss Molly-Mae. It makes sense, then, that the collegiate code is being recast by a new generation of designers and fashion fans, letting the horse girl roam wild and free. Below, we explore the trend through its landmark pieces – albeit a little more Dover Street than Downing Street. 



In the autumn of 1988, Vivienne Westwood took a match to British country tailoring, sending out a collection of Fair Isle sweaters, Harris Tweed tailoring, and plaid skirts, which had been slashed to bawdy effect. A calling card of the punk movement, the kilt was soon repackaged by American designers in the 90s, like Ralph Lauren, and worn by preppy school girls (most notably Cher Horrowitz in *Clueless*) who found prestige in British heritage. Today, the kilt has regained its anarchic attitude thanks to the sugary pop punk of Olivia Rodrigo and CSM graduates, Chopova Lowena, whose mini and knee-length iterations – strung together by hefty carabiner belts – have become a cult favourite of men and women in the know.

Beloved of the Balmoral set, the silk scarf has acquired an unexpected currency over the past few seasons – as seen on blockbuster runways like Gucci, JW Anderson, Versace, Celine, and Burberry. But perhaps its most surprising appearances have been on Dua Lipa, A$AP Rocky, and Frank Ocean, whose ironic adoption of the protective headwrap has seen the style replicated across glossy magazine spreads and newsfeeds alike. These kinds of headscarves conjure images of cat-eye sunglasses and cadillac convertibles, but so too do they geriatric women wielding opera glasses at the polo. Speaking of, the horse girl has become something of a protagonist on recent runways, exemplified no clearer than when Grace Kelly’s granddaughter galloped down the Chanel runway on a real-life stallion.

The tennis skirt’s appearance on the FYP began to proliferate trend pieces last year, with young people incorporating Nike minis alongside a revival of the Health Goth – and just about every 2010s Tumblr persona. But one of the presiding images of the last AW22 season saw the tennis skirt embraced – not for its subcultural value – but for its country club associations. Miuccia Prada, for example, sent out her infamous Miu Miu set in an all-white pleated iteration, styled with a polo shirt, and a useless little neck scarf, conjuring the spirit of Blair Waldorf. The look wasn’t nearly as prissy as one might imagine, though, with visible waistbands practically huffing with pent up energy.

There’s nothing that rich people love more than going on punishing walks through the countryside, slopping through muck and manure in their Hunter wellies. But the Wellington boot has been redefined by the likes of Demna at Balenciaga, Matthew Williams at Givenchy, and Daniel Lee who reinvigorated Bottega Veneta with his must-have accessories. The Puddle Boot, as it was renamed, birthed a slew of foamy, amphibious descendants, each one more wipe-clean and fetishistic than the last. Even Margiela’s Tabis now come moulded in rubber. If it’s not wellies, it’s knee-high waders or riding boots, the likes of which have been proffered at Gucci and Givenchy with hulking padlocks and gilded buttons – putting the bourgeoisie in BDSM.

The smooth-lined white shirt, worn with straight-legged indigo denim, is an enduring staple of collegiate style. It became a hallmark of the 90s too, via GAP and Calvin Klein, which blew up the Oxford Shirt’s traditional proportions and repackaged the item as something you might borrow from your boyfriend. Alongside [Rugby Shirts](https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca9gk6MsZrU/) and Football jerseys, the AW22 runways played with that same dynamic: crisp and crunchy shirting swallowed models at Alaïa, Louis Vuitton, and Peter Do, while Miuccia, quite literally, hacked at the tradition to reveal a slither of underboob at Miu Miu. For the more debonair, SS Daley and Molly Goddard introduced us to the neo-dandy with pastoral embroideries, Oscar Wilde sleeves, and pleated bibs – a style almost single-handedly hawked by Harry Styles.

Preppy style is making a pretty vibey comeback

Britney Spears is free, Paris Hilton is back on reality TV, and Avril Lavigne is about to embark on a world tour for her new album – it’s no secret at this point that a major Y2K cultural renaissance is upon us. For more proof, see the *Euphoria* cast’s diamante face gems and cut-outs and Charli XCX’s slogan baby tees, or simply scroll through your TikTok For You Page to see flocks of Gen Z showing off Juicy velour tracksuits, low-waisted mini skirts, and bubblegum pink crop tops. Perhaps, at the helm of the trend is Italian fashion house Blumarine – a cult label and celebrity fashion fave from the 80s until the mid-00s, which has now seen a major resurgence under creative director and designer Nicolas Brognano. 

While the label reached its peak in the early 00s, it was founded two decades earlier in Capri, Italy by Anna Molinari and her husband Gianpaolo Tarabini. In 1981, Blumarine made an acclaimed debut at Milan Fashion Week – carving out their niche with matching leopard sets, slinky sequin dresses, fur-trimmed cardigans, and lots of bubble-gum pink. Meanwhile, in the 90s, the brand teamed up with supermodels Linda Evalgelista, Naomi Campbell, Adriana Lima, and Nadja Auermann and photographers Helmut Newton and Ellen von Unwerth to collaborate on now-infamous fashion campaigns.

When Y2K hit, Blumarine became a go-to label for celebrities on red carpets and nights out. In 2003, Britney Murphy wore a [floral, party-girl dress](https://twitter.com/peppermintfroot/status/1512490514603462660) during her starring Uptown Girls role; in 2004, Lindsay Lohan wore a sequin [mini dress](https://twitter.com/LohanItaly/status/656953654860251136?s=20&t=tiIs0lqTifZW5d0zZOoVcg) at the MTV Movie Awards; and in 2006, Blake Lively wore a laid-back floral one while filming *Gossip Girl*’s debut season. However, moving into the 2010s, the label began to fade out in pop culture as fashion moved away from Y2K styles.

Now – roughly 20 years after its peak – the brand is experiencing a major comeback, thanks to Bragnano’s viral, nostalgic designs. While he was appointed creative director in 2019, the Italian designer debuted the brand during MFW’s SS21 season. Shortly after, for AW21, he released a collection paying homage to 00s legends – including Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Destiny’s Child. 

“I wanted to show a collection that talks about happiness, sexiness, freedom. Something that breaks the rules,” Brognano explained, after sending models down the runway in newsboy caps, butterfly tops, slinky, low-waisted trousers, and plenty of sequins. “I feel very close to the early 2000s because I grew up in these years and it was natural for me to present them to the Blumarine audience. From the heritage of the brand, I wanted to revisit the sense of sensuality, not in a vulgar way, but with irony and lightness of touch.” Speaking to *Vogue*, the designer describes his Blumarine as “more dirty, b-tchy, sexier” than its sweet past.

Soon after Blumarine’s debut, rising pop star [Olivia Rodrigo](https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ9zravBcFB/) showed off her own thrifted, blue and green sequinned version of the brand’s butterfly top via Instagram, [Saweetie](https://www.instagram.com/p/BzeezhKh8Jo/) sported a pink sequinned one at a club night, and [Dua Lipa](https://www.instagram.com/p/CUaXhTnNYZA/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading) posted an asymmetrical rework of the style made by designer Masha Popova. Meanwhile, supermodel Bella Hadid was [spotted](https://twitter.com/VERSACESAINTZ/status/1409130488397172739?s=20&t=FBH1alp-Y9O3rLC8ZYLRzw) wearing the brand in Paris, and Kendall Jenner was [snapped](https://twitter.com/archivekend/status/1355545264875065347?s=20&t=FBH1alp-Y9O3rLC8ZYLRzw) wearing its SS21 yellow silk scarf-top and leopard trousers while lounging at home.

“I’m happy that Gen Z is able to appreciate the 2000s even [though] they didn’t live that period,” said Brognano, speaking to Blumarine’s popularity among Gen Z. “There is something cyclic in trends, but especially for the early 2000s. I feel it was the right moment to talk about it, because today people need happiness, joy, and a sense of lightness in their lives more than ever. These three elements, with a touch of glamour, describe perfectly the early 2000s.”

What do you first think of when you hear the name Anna Wintour? It might be her iconic bob hairdo, or the sunglasses she wears so often. Maybe it’s ‘Devil Wears Prada’, the film roughly inspired by her ice-queen antics at Vogue HQ, where she eats her [go-to $77 salad lunch](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-10809735/Anna-Wintour-biographer-reveals-77-33-tomato-free-salad-steak-lunch-Vogue-editor-used-eat.html) every day. Or perhaps you think of the Met Gala, the glamorous fundraiser she throws every year for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City.

But even though she’s a famous tennis fan, we guarantee you probably won’t associate sportswear with Vogue’s Editor-in-chief. Yes, Wintour wears adidas too. In a selfie posted by Kim Kardashian, she was spotted wearing a piece from the adidas x Gucci collaboration that dropped earlier this month. (So technically it’s not just adidas).

The outfit choice is unusual for Wintour. Some of her favourite designers include Manolo Blahnik and Chanel, while [The Cut ](https://www.thecut.com/2012/08/anna-wintour-look-book.html)describes her default look as “a nipped-in waist, a hemline falling to her knee or below, and a conservative neckline, usually accessorised with a chunky necklace.” Her adidas x Gucci fit is consistent with Wintour’s usual choice of a conservative neckline and a streamlined silhouette. She finishes the look with her signature sunglasses and bob haircut, so she’s not changing everything about her vibe.

The collaboration between adidas and Gucci features an array of bold, colourful garments, footwear and accessories, from handbags to sneakers and sportswear. It is inspired by a vintage, collegiate style which reimagines sportswear as both contemporary and nostalgia-driven. The collection follows Gucci’s recent collaboration with mountain wear brand The North Face. 
We’re guessing it’s unlikely we’ll see Wintour wearing mountainwear any time soon. But then again, a decade ago, it would have seemed strange to imagine Wintour posting a selfie with a reality star – so anything is possible.

We’re most definitely living through a time of serious nostalgia in culture and fashion. There’s just about a remake, reboot, sequels and prequels of just about every show and film of the last 25 years – and comics are no exception. 

Now a remake of the 1998 cult classic superhero horror film Blade is coming out later in the year. In many ways, the Blade trilogy helped kickstart and shape the Marvel Cinematic Universe over two decades ago and was the first film to feature a black superhero as the lead. It follows the story of a slick vampire slayer (who’s actually half-vampire himself) played by Wesley Snipes, as he tries to protect mortals from all the evil in the world. But more than anything, Blade will always be remembered for the 90s looks, the leather, and of course, the sharpest shape-up. 


Now, Mahershala Ali will be carrying on the baton from Wesley Snipes, and while very few details for the new film are known, one thing we do know is that vampire, goth, dystopian aesthetic is most definitely back on the big screen and influencing menswear. 

From Robert Pattinson’s take on The Batman – who looked more like an emo Berlin techno DJ than a playboy billionaire – to Keanu Reeves reprising his role as Neo in Matrix  Resurrection in 2021 – the teeny glasses, long coats, platforms, vests and all black everything is having its moment. Think oversized silhouettes and layering like those by Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto. So, if you want to get that experimental, grungey vampire aesthetic, then look no further.

The late Virgil Abloh’s influence on fashion is undeniable. Through his brand OFF-WHITE, and later as the artistic director of Louis Vitton menswear, he shaped what streetwear in high fashion spaces could be. And by far one of his greatest influences was making men’s harnesses and outer vests, or as he referred to them, “mid-layer garments” a moment. This OFF-WHITE black vest is the perfect garment to add extra layering to your look. Wear it under a heavy coat, or over a jacket.

A core part of the Blade aesthetic has to be the teeny black sunglasses. Nobody does it better right now than Black British designer Christianah Jones. She rose to fame via Depop and now her glasses have been worn by the likes of Beyonce and Billie Eilish. These upturned 3LW’s, inspired by the 90s pop group of the same name, add a little uniqueness to the traditional small sunglasses.

Blade and Batman are Back, so is Dystopian Dressing

SS23 is about hot truckers, skaters, and double denim. We’re well into the swing of men's fashion week, which has already taken place in London and Milan with Paris and New York incoming. It’s the first time in over two years the fashion event has been able to take place without restrictions — finally, a chance to see Jeff Goldblum shine as the ultimate daddy style icon IRL.

Big shows that we should keep our eyes on for trends in Paris include Rick Owens, Kenzo and Loewe. Closer to home, JW Anderson’s surreal silhouettes made headlines London, which offered a big celebration of juggarnaut designers like Ahluwalia and Robyn Lynch, who champion their respective heritages in their clothes. Martine Rose (rumoured to be Louis Vuitton’s next creative director) was a big highlight too, showcasing the best of British.

We’ll be updating as the looks keep coming, so bookmark this post as your guide to the most wearable SS23.


Summer is here and trucker hats are the sunny day accessory to cop. The street style punctuating the 2023 menswear shows sees trucker hats paired with anything from summer dresses to power suits, big silhouettes and sleek tailoring. [Florence, London, Milan and Paris](https://www.vogue.com/article/the-trucker-hat-is-the-must-have-of-mens-fashion-week-street-style) gave us a peek at the hat-du-jour. They’re stylish and a statement — oh, the added sun protection is a bonus too. 

It seems like artful affirmations are trending this year too. Designers across SS23 have been wearing their hearts on their sleeves (or torso) and telling it like it is through bold slogans. 

For instance, British design duo Jordan Luca’s show featured T-shirts declaring “the future is yours”. How poetic… A positive mental attitude reared up in Dhruv Kapoor’s Milan show of his collection too, which advised wearers to “protect your energy”. Makes sense, given that Kapoor made history as the first Indian designer to show at Milan’s men’s offering.

D&G also provided a playful ode to David Beckham with shirts printed with his name and England football team number, amid the Y2K tattered denim and embellished suits.

The “Canadian tuxedo” has been a recent hit in the fashion world too. Double-denim — when done correctly — is an eye-catching and bold look, leaving Justin Timberlake in the dust. A host of designers have decided to double up on denim at the SS23 shows in Milan and London. 

Double-denim was central to the Dolce & Gabbana show in which models wore a series of distressed DD looks. Worn, pale, ravaged denim also made an appearance in Italian label MSGM’s western-inspired catwalk show. It seems many designers are going for this classic theme this year. 

Jeff Goldblum also made an appearance on the Prada frow – not as a model this time, sadly – in the brand's stellar bleached double denim suit. But of course, it's Prada, so classics are punctuated with twists – black suits and cowboy boots, leather short shorts. Cherry pick as you will.

Fabric below the stomach? Not for us… designers across the board have been slashing tops at the waist, freeing the belly and bringing crop tops into style whatever your gender. 

Moschino, for one, showcased an ab-flashing collection of cropped shirts and t-shirts. Fendi, which started the male midriff mania with crop top suiting in SS22, instead gave us bellybutton-skimming deep V shirts and bare chests under oversized blazers.

Surrealism has long been an aesthetic inspiration for fashion, and Jonathan Anderson gave it a new twist on the Milan catwalk. His playful, creative streak in menswear shined through, as he combined classic skater boy style with colour and jagged silhouettes, using broken skateboards and bicycle frames attached to oversized sweatshirts. BMX handlebars spiked the shoulders of models – because, why not? It was loads of fun. Jeremy Scott at Moschino also drew on the surrealist world for SS23. The brand celebrated the abstract figurative work of late illustrator and photographer Tony Viramontes in the label’s first fully dedicated menswear show, with suits that featured hand-drawn, felt pen scribbles, with sweats highlighted with pen strokes.

Central to SS23 has been designers who celebrate heritage and culture. Robyn Lynch’s collection, which debuted in at East London Truman’s Brewery, pays homage to her Irish roots, focusing on traditional cable knits and tailoring. 

British-Jamaican menswear designer Martine Rose typically draws inspiration for her designs from her experience growing up in South London, surrounded by a multitude of subcultures, including the rave and reggae scenes of the '90s. She presented her collection in a Vauxhall railway arch (previously home to legendary gay Sauna Chariots), showcasing pieces that show the joy living, loving and partying in London. 


In Florence, Wales Bonner’s runway [was designed to bring](https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/spring-2023-menswear/wales-bonner) “Afro-Atlantic spirit to European luxury”. 

Specialist suites and tailoring has been a key theme of this summer’s fashion week: with designer Martine Rose at the forefront of this style. Forget everything you thought you knew about suiting: instead, think pulled cloth against the body with tightened torsos; trench coats with belts a little too high, and MA-I bombers narrowed and cropped in the body.


Y2K sunglasses have made a comeback, and they're bigger and better than ever. Rick Owens showed his spring 2023 collection in Paris around a caged wrecking ball which was set on fire, showcasing the best of the bold sunnies (which probably came in handy in front of the bright flames).

Men’s Fashion Week so far: the trends you’ll actually want to try

We’re in the middle of a pop culture moment where male celebrities, from Lil Nas X to Harry Styles and Olly Alexander, are able to live their best lives and be pretty “out there” when it comes to fashion. Right now, some famous men are embracing bold colours, costumic pieces and even dresses.

And it’s not just about younger men, either. In the last few years, Jeff Goldblum has emerged as a fashion hero for men who don’t want to shrink away or blend into the crowd. At 70 years old and towering over six foot, his fashion choices are getting bolder. He has embraced colour, patterns and prints from the likes of Prada, Gucci shirts and Raf Simons too. Andrew Thomas Vottero, Goldblum’s stylist, has definitely played a major role in the actor’s style evolution in recent years for sure. 

Most recently, the Jurassic Park star was shot by David Sims in Prada’s AW22 campaign. He also graced the cover of ES Magazine in a bold summer co-ord, and inside the magazine he donned a leopard-print velour tracksuit – hardly garments that are typically associated with most 70-year-old men.

Goldblum’s looks work because he has something money can’t buy: a vibe. We know he thinks he looks great, so it’s easy to agree. There’s a confidence and joy which radiates from him which is impossible not to stan on some level, regardless of personal taste. 

So, in honour of Hollywood's best-dressed septuagenarian, here are 11 Jeff Goldblum looks we can’t stop obsessing over.

**A NEUTRAL SUIT AND PATTERN POPPING SHIRT**


Remember when Barack Obama sent *Fox News* et al into meltdown for wearing a tan suit? It was a much simpler time when *that* was a political controversy. But Goldblum admittedly pulls this off more than the former commander-in-chief. The key here is the printed patterned shirt with its camp collar and thrilling pop of abstract designs to jazz up the entire look. A pair of gold-rimmed Jacques Marie Mage aviator frames top it all off.

**STRIPES ON STRIPES ON STRIPES**



Goldblum knows more than most that, sometimes, more really is more. This striped ensemble might not be his most “out there” look, but being brave and bold enough to clash three different stripe fabrics is what makes it work.

**MONOCHROME MAN**

Who said monochrome has to be simple and boring? Here, Goldblum channels the wild west in this patterned Prada shirt, made in collaboration with French artist Christophe Chemin. With its Dino print, Jeff aptly captioned this image on IG as ‘survival utopia’.

In this ensemble, Goldblum sports a Loewe x Paula’s Ibiza shirt paired with floral shorts by Pleasures. And how best to complete a look where more is most definitely more? A pair of lime green calf-hair loafers from Marni, naturally.

Continuing the maximalist theme, here we have a scally-meets-disco-inspired look from Goldblum. Again, the combination of a metallic Celine windbreaker with a pair of Dries Van Noten shorts probably wouldn’t suit just anyone, but Goldblum has the vibe to pull them off. 

**FORMAL DETAILS**

By now we know that, if Goldblum is going to wear a black suit, it’s not going to be the standard, run-of-the-mill formal look. Here we have a collage of different patterns, from the snakeskin tie to zebra-print shoes, which underline Goldblum’s ability to stand out from the crowd.

Goldblum’s 2017 photoshoot for *Shortlist Magazine* went viral - and it’s easy to see why. Aside from the actor himself, obviously, his rainbow striped cat jumper was the star of the show: it’s Versace-meets-Kenzo-meets-Pride. And somehow it works.

**EVIL SKI VILLAIN**

Goldblum mostly plays “good guys” in his films. But here we see him channelling some sort of sci-fi villain at Sundance Film Festival, dressed in an all-white ensemble with a Prada coat, Gucci blazer and turtleneck, Acne Studios jeans, and Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses. It’s similar to Gaga’s all-white ski ensemble in *House of Gucci*, where she uttered the infamous line: “I don’t consider myself a particularly ethical person, but I am fair.” In this look, Goldblum looks ready to say similar, all while getting set to take over the world (or try to destroy it from a high-tech space station).

**COWBOY CHIC**

Did someone say “yee haw”? Goldblum’s looks often feature a western-inspired vibe. This head-to-toe satin getup, by Raf Simons for Calvin Klein, feels like something straight out of everyone’s *The Power of the Dog* fantasy (though it came two years before that, so really Goldblum is the trend-setter).

**THE ZEBRA KING**

“Are you wearing th-” “The zebra pants? Yeah”. By now, we know Goldblum isn’t afraid of a little pattern. And these Isabel Marant zebra trousers are a “moment” if ever we’ve seen one. Paired with a biker jacket, there’s something a little “rockstar” about this look. Now *that’s* how you make an entrance.

Love Lil Kim? Crying for Cardi’s nails? Studded and jewelled painted acrylic nails, dark brown glossy lips, gravity-defying and technicolour lace-front wigs and sweeping semi-permanent makeup: ‘Boughetto beauty’ is on the rise. It’s providing us with a knowing side-eye, a campy, at times garish and high-drama, sometimes just completely undefinable, aesthetic that blends the highbrow and lowbrow elements of black beauty across the decades. And it’s the foremost aesthetic right now. 

Although there are countless makeup trends and aesthetics synonymous with Black beauty, arguably none has become more recognisable and part of pop culture than ‘boughetto’ – a blend of the words ‘Bougie’ and ‘Ghetto’. The exact origin of this aesthetic, much like its moniker, is multi-layered, drawing from black beauty trends spanning decades. It originated in black neighbourhoods like the Bronx in NYC and the inner-streets of Chicago, and the style was then popularised by 1990s hip hop icons from Lil Kim to TLC and Missy Elliott. Today, it’s a reference for everyone from beauty influencer Jackie Aina to Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, and British acts Stefflon Don and Miss Banks across the pond. Cardi B’s nail tech [Jenny Bui](https://www.instagram.com/nailson7th/?hl=en) has become a celebrity herself in and beyond the scene for her XXL nails. Jonathan Wright is renowned worldwide for his colour hairstyles on clients including Keke Palmer, Megan Thee Stallion, Blac Chyna, and Saweetie. You’ll find 100,000 tags on TikTok and Instagram combined.

The mainstream beauty industry has long been at odds historically with black beauty, cherrypicking elements it deems as chic for white women to try on, and discarding what it sees as ratchet. You just have to look at the rise of the Kardashians and their litany of ‘boxer braids’ and BBLs, and the Blackfishing of celebrities like Ariana Grande to present and profit as racially ambiguous. It’s what designer and fashion activist [Nareasha Willis ](https://www.instagram.com/nareashawillis/?hl=en)describes as ‘Ghetto until proven fashionable’, where you’ll have seen across countless catwalks that showcased black hairstyles sans black models (hello, Marc Jacobs, the Hadids, and those pastel dreads!). 

In the last few years, we have begun to bear witness to a widespread reclamation of the style in a way that champions its black connoisseurs, and moves away from a beauty binary that dispenses with black culture it deems not good enough.  Black beauty continues to have increasing cultural capital and an ever-increasing market share – one that according to the [British Beauty Council](https://britishbeautycouncil.com/the-2-7billion-missed-opportunity/), is currently worth around £230 million a month. Despite the fact that nearly four in 10 black female shoppers state that they still find the process of finding cosmetics and skincare on the highstreet difficult, thanks to the rise recognition of boughetto beauty and a boom in industry wavemakers like Rih’s Fenty and celebrity makeup artist Pat McGrath’s eponymous brand, change is afoot. 

Outside of pop culture, young women are playing with its boundaries. Lorna, a black 25-year-old social strategist from South London, says this social shift has been apparent to her for a while. “People have long – even if they didn’t admit it to themselves – wanted to fit in, and gain white, male or mainstream acceptance,” Lorna says. “But now with ‘ratchet’ beauty becoming the norm, it’s marking an end to that – now black women no longer care whether makeup and beauty practices that were oftentimes dismissed as too ‘ghetto’ receive outside approval.”


 Now, she thinks, “it’s easier not only to wear these styles – I love sporting a 360 HD Saweetie- esque wig on a random Monday – but also to advocate for women that favour this aesthetic when it comes to casting for campaigns and projects.” 

“The impact of this moment right now really lies in the fact that we can fully be who we are, without caring about how palatable it for disparaging onlookers, who are becoming used to the fact that for many of us, this is a foundational style,” says Aixa, a 22-year-old A&R intern. “The aesthetic has given to me what so many black people before me were deprived of, and that’s the climate and conviction to be unapologetically me. Without people in public calling my outfit  ratchet. Without fear of people in the office thinking I look unprofessional.” 

Aixa adds: “I am in my Butterfly era, my whole Pinterest board and Instagram saved folder is filled with looks from the Lil Kim archive and Aaliyah at the MTV awards in 1999/2000, even though these moments happened before I was even alive, I feel such an affinity to them because of how they influence my current style. Take the iconic Lil Kim pasty moment (at the MTV awards in 1999), it wasn’t just impactful because she was ‘showing skin’ but because she showed up in an unapologetic way, that didn’t bow down to the respectability politics black women are so often expected to adhere to. It’s an ideal I try to embody now”. 

When booking beauty maintenance appointments, the 22 -year -old uses these iconic cultural references. “I’ll flip through my boards and decide what nail vibe I want to go for. If I am after a full Aaliyah moment I’ll opt for a mid length acrylic with heavy nail art. Whereas a Cardi moment requires gemstones and a length so long that typing becomes an extreme sport.” 


Really, it’s a lifestyle. Impeccably upkept head to toe beauty rituals can be dipped in and out of. “It’s important to recognise that the curation of the look goes beyond personal care for women,” says Lorna. “It is a no hold barred presentation of styles and beauty trends that we grew up seeing, in a niche way now brought to centre stage.”

But it’s not just women, according to Lorna. “With their intricate cornrows, perfectly white teeth iced out with the latest grill, male rappers like Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne live and breathe Boughetto beauty too!” says Lorna. 

Black TikTok users are doing tutorials of how to achieve the look and racking up the views. Take the flipped ponytail with a ‘swooped’ fringe or countless tips on how to install waist length wigs. “It’s an accessible way for us to replicate the bold makeup and hairstyles we grew up seeing on celebrities, aunties, and stylish older cousins,” says Aixa. “It’s wonderful to see it rightfully celebrated online by a new generation.”

“It’s so much more than just a beauty trend to me,” says Aixa. “It’s beauty and grace with a side of ‘don’t fuck with me’, which is why I think this generation loves it so much. This generation isn’t afraid of embracing difference or innovation– so although Boughetto looks drawn from past styles, we don’t feel the need for it to be co-signed by mainstream magazines or old school beauty standards,” says Aixa.  

For black women showing up in a world that has historically slated many beloved beauty trends as ‘too much’, the increase in accessibility to tips and tricks for this amalgamation of black beauty highlights is long overdue. Black women are harnessing a growing power over the beauty zeitgeist, so long live Boughetto.
