On Sunday, musician Lil Uzi Vert dropped new pronouns: subtly updating their Instagram bio to “they/them” on the last day of Non-Binary Week. Since then, Twitter has dubbed them “officially the best non binary rapper of all time” — but are they actually non-binary? At the time of writing, no official statement has been released by the artist (believe us, we've been staking out Lil Uzi's socials) so maybe it's safest not to jump to conclusions. After all, everyone should have the space to come out on their own terms and there's really no point in rushing someone before they're ready or even had time to process how they feel about their gender.

But that’s not to say that there aren’t plenty of other non-binary celebrities to look up to. While there’s sadly no denying that the LGBTQIA+ community still faces major hurdles, there has thankfully been huge advancement in terms of representation. Nowadays, there are plenty of notable figures in the public eye shaping opinions about what it means to be non-binary. From music and the world of publishing, to screens big and small, there are so many non-binary people out there showing that gender really is infinite...discover some of them below.

Arca

Venezuelan producer Arca has worked with everyone from Björk to Rosalia — does she really need much more intro than that? Going by the pronouns "she/it/they", they opened up to i-D in 2020 to explain that; “I see my gender identity as non-binary, and I identify as a trans Latina woman.“ Arca’s latest series of albums – KicK i, KicK ii, iii, iii – from 2021 explored concepts of gender, immigrant identity, and fluid ideas of self.

Emma Corrin

You might have seen actor Emma Corrin when they played forever icon Princess Diana in The Crown, or caught their powerful performance at the Brits this year alongside Little Simz. They’re also a fashion darling of the moment, as one of this year’s Met Gala’s best dressed, appearing in Miu Miu, Prada, Loewe and more in campaigns. They first opened up about their identity in July 2021, sharing a picture on Instagram showing themselves in a binder. Since then, they've changed their pronouns to they/them and opened up about gender fluidity as Vogue’s August cover star.

Janelle Monáe

Whether it's as a musician (who can forget ultimate sapphic jam "PYNK"?) or an actor appearing in films like *Hidden Figures *and *Moonlight *, Janelle Monáe is a seriously big deal. After coming out as non-binary on the Red Table Talk in April, she spoke to Los Angeles Times to clarify that their pronouns are; “free-ass motherfucker and they/them, her/she.”

Demi Lovato

How could we write this list without including Demi Lovato? The one-time Disney Channel star and purveyor of bisexual bops first revealed they are non-binary in May 2021, saying; "I'm still learning and coming into myself; I don't claim to be an expert or a spokesperson."

Akwaeke Emezi

Regardless of whether you're a BookTok fan with a massive TBR pile or haven't cracked open a book in years, it's time to get to know Akwaeke Emezi. The author of books like Freshwater, Pet and The Death of Vivek Oji their work explores gender, their Igbo heritage and romance — and their most recent novel You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty is getting its own Amazon Studios adaptation...

I. Jordan

Gone out out recently? Enjoying festival season this summer? You've probably come across I.Jordan, a producer and DJ whose feel-good tracks are the sonic equivalent of queer euphoria. Identifying as gender fluid and gender queer, they've already worked with mega producer Fred Again and dropped their debut album Watch Out! on Ninja Tune last year.

Lachlan Watson

Remember Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (RIP)? The Kiernan Shipka-helmed reboot of the 90s teen show introduced the world to non-binary actor Lachlan Watson, who is now keeping it spooky with a role in the second series of American horror show Chucky.

Chella Man

Model, actor and artist Chella Man has grown a huge following and is outspoken about his intersecting identities as a trans and deaf person of colour. Clarifying his identity in 2019, he told Instagram followers; "I do not identify as a trans-man. I identify as genderqueer/non-binary."

Ashnikko

TikTok queen and one half of our favourite queer power couple with Arlo Parks, Ashnikko is the blue-haired, singer-songwriter who we all wish we knew IRL. Back in May 2021, she shared with Twitter followers that she identifies as "pansexual and genderfluid [sic]". Since then, they've updated their pronouns on social media to "she/they".

Kehlani

What's not to love about Kehlani? Not only are they a talented musician, they've also proudly shared their personal evolution, identifying as pansexual and queer before later embracing the "lesbian" label, and been candid about their relationship with gender. At the time of writing, the artist uses "she/they" pronouns and has said; "I don't mind when people say 'she' at all, but something feels really affirming when people say 'they.'"

Amandla Stenberg

Back in 2016, actor Amandla Stenberg opened up to Tumblr followers (back when that was a thing) about the intricacies of identifying as non-binary within the feminist movement, pondering; "How do you claim a movement for women when you don’t always feel like one?" Since then, Stenberg has alternated between they/them and she/they pronouns at various points throughout the years, and spoke to People to say that; "[Gender] can be pretty much whatever you want it to be."
