This week on TikTok was all about fig trees, the downfall of celeb brands and Coachella's conflicting future

Hiya, chronically online scrollers! Welcome back to TikTok Decoder, woo’s weekly breakdown of trends, sounds and creators brought to you by senior writer Darshita Goyal <3 This week was an absolute doozy, everyone and everything went viral and became a trend. I’ve picked my five favourites, but an honorary mention to BookTok’s 1984 obsession featuring a seemingly NSFW audio clip of Andrew Scott and Andrew Garfield, and the internet’s preoccupation with gendered fashion. People set out to find the girl equivalent of the men’s backward cap and grey sweats, so place your bets. And buckle in!

trending: this is my fig tree

Who’s shocked that Gen Z loves Sylvia Plath? The fig tree analogy comes from a famous quote a la Plath’s book The Bell Jar where the figs symbolise all the paths you could’ve taken in life – but you’re only allowed to pick one. TikTokers are now sharing videos of a fig tree with each fig representing a different personal victory and all the subsequent lives they could embody. Think: gardener, environmental scientist, mother, nepo baby, wag! The answers range from inspirational to silly to downright delulu but unsurprisingly, no one listed a 9 to 5 job :’)

freshly viral: can you bring your s/o to our plans?

Podcast host and content creator @Bran_Flakezz is back with an axis chart, so pay attention. This time he’s answering the age old qualm: can I bring my significant other to our plans? We’ve all either forced our partners into friend groups or worse, been at the other end and it’s not pretty. Bran plots the intimacy and formality of an event as measures of when it’s allowed. The video is fun (and helpful) but the real gold mine is the comments section. I can never get over just how brutally honest and funny people can be when talking to complete strangers. Love the wild worldwide web!
