Last night was the eagerly anticipated Met Gala, the evening where about 400 celebrities across music, fashion, film and art gather together in celebration of all things fashion, serve some serious looks, conduct some overly awkward red carpet interviews, and of course, provide us with a year’s worth of meme fodder. We love to critique fashion’s fave night out from our beds and TikTok feeds, distilling who did and didn't understand the assignment set by Anna Wintour.

Over the years, there have been a plethora of iconic fits. From Blake Lively’s 2018 intricate Versace fit that took over 600 hours to complete, to Rhianna’s regal yellow Guo Pei gown that was the moment in 2015, and Billy Porter’s wonderfully camp Sun God fit in 2019 that stole our hearts. It’s no surprise that the Met Gala is one of the most photographed – also most memed – events of the year.

Attendees this year were asked “to embody the grandeur – and perhaps the dichotomy – of Gilded Age New York” by taking on a late 19th century White Tie dress code, bringing whatever modern twist they could. 2022 brought together the biggest names in popular culture. There were couples of the moment including Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson, Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian, Kaia Gerber and Austin Butler. Then there was Stormzy, Bella Hadid, Jacob Elordi, Emma Chamberlain, Kate Moss and Lila Moss, and SZA to name a few. Headline-grabbing moments include Kim K in that incredible Marilyn Munroe dress, Nicki Minaj cussing someone out on the carpet, Jared Leto playing spot the difference with Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele in matching outfits, and Emma Chamberlain's chaotic red carpet one-to-ones.

In years gone by, memes made Rihanna into a giant pizza, and everyone had lots to say about Frank Ocean’s alien baby. And who could forget Kim’s Balenciaga head-to-toe face covering black look, or Lil Nas X’s three-layered gold gilded ensemble? This year didn’t disappoint on the meme and reactions front anyway. Here’s the very best reactions and memes to the 2022 event.
